Wailua Falls General Description

Wailua Falls may well be one of the most popular sights on the island of Kauai. Perhaps it is the proximity of the falls to central Lihue town, or perhaps it's the beauty of the falls as they are adorned by a rainbow in the late afternoon sun. Either way, this is a must see falls when visiting the island, it's so close, there's no excuse not to stop by for at least a few minutes.

Despite what some websites and/or guidebooks might say, Wailua Falls is 85 feet tall. The pool beneath it is around 30ft in depth, but don't even think of diving off the cliff into the pool; it could prove to be a fatal mistake. Ancient Hawaiians once learned as much when proving their manhood (or foolishness, take your pick).

We, the county of Kauai, your mother, and all of us with any concern for your well being recommend you do NOT hike to the bottom of the falls. The signs erected at each trail are a testament to this fact.

Right after mile marker 1 on Highway 56 there will be a road on your left, Ma'alo Road (Highway 583), accompanied by a sign pointing you in the direction of the falls. Take the short drive up this road which will end at a parking lot overlooking the falls. If you're lucky, the sun will be at the right angle, and you'll get a beautiful rainbow extending out from the base of the falls in the mist.
