Nounou East Trail

Nounou East Trail General Description

Nounou or Sleeping Giant trail is one of the best hikes on the east side of Kauai. The East trail is one of three trails that rise to the top of the Sleeping Giant, but we prefer this one of the bunch. The Sleeping Giant's profile is most easily seen from nearly anywhere in Kapa'a - it's easiest to spot his chin first as the outcrop of rock in the mountain. This trail ascends the mountain through the forest, in switcback form mostly, to sweeping views of East Kauai. You'll gain 1000' in elevation climbing, and it can be warm out if you start later in the day, but the views will more than rewards your work.

If you are very bold and perhaps a little crazy when it comes to hiking, then it is possible to hike out onto the giants chin (that rock outcrop you saw from below). The 'trail' is extremely narrow in parts with hundred foot drop offs at many points. Proceed at your own caution.

To reach the trail, head north from Lihue on Hwy. 56. After 8 miles turn left (mauka) onto Haleilio Road at the traffic light. When the road begins to curve to the left look on your right for telephone pole #38 with the trail head marking. Park here and the trail beings on your right.

Just before the top, there is a three-way junction surrounded by hala trees. Take the left fork. Nearly right after, you will find another fork, both paths lead to the picnic shelter, although the right one is easier.
